There have been many changes over the years. Here is an easy way to find out what happened to some of those companies you never hear about anymore.
Abbey Life Inc. Co of Canada has changed name to ITT Hartford Life Ins. Co of Canada July 1, 1994. ITT Hartford Life Inc. Co. of Canada changed its name to Hartford Life Ins. Co. of Canada as of Oct. 1, 1997. Now AIG Life. AIG taken over by BMO Insurance 2009.
Aeterna-Life Ins. Co. merged its business with Desjardins-Laurentian Life on Dec. 30, 1995. Now Desjardins Financial Services.
Aetna Life Insurance Co. of Canada amalgamated with Maritime Life Assurance Co. Jan. 1, 2000. Effective 2004 Manulife Financial.
AFLAC Insurance Co. of Canada name changed to Ingle Life & Health Assurance Co. as of Jan 23, 1998.
Allstate Life Insurance Company ceased marketing individual life in Canada. Book of business transferred to Clarica. Clarica now part of Sun Life of Canada.
American International Assurance Life changed its name to AIG Life Insurance Co. as of April 1, 1998.
AIG taken over by BMO Insurance 2009.
AXA Insurance taken over by SSQ in 2012.
CNA Life of Canada: purchased by Canada Life in 2003.
Canadian General Life amalgamated with Westbury Life July 1, 1989, forming Westbury Canadian Life Insurance Company. Westbury Canadian Life Insurance Co. amalgamated with RBC Life Insurance Co. as of July 3, 2000.
Citadel Life Assurance ceased writing new life and health insurance business in Canada in April 1992. The company sold to J C Penny Life and the name changed back to Canadian Premier Life Ins. Co on January 1, 1994. (Owned by Aegon Canada now).
Colonia Life Insurance Co. changed its name to Concordia Life Ins. Co. as of Dec. 30, 1998. Concordia Life Ins. Co. of Canada amalgamated with Empire Financial January 2, 2002.
Commercial Union Life Assurance Co. of Canada amalgamated with Manufacturers Life Insurance. Co. as of April 5, 2001. Now Manulife Financial.
Confederation Life Insurance Co. – As of August 1994, the O.F.S.I. took control as a provisional liquidator. September of 1994, Group Life and Health was acquired by Manulife. Maritime Life took over the majority of the life insurance policies. Now Manulife Financial.
Crown Life Insurance Co. of Canada amalgamated with Canada Life Assurance Co. in July, 1999. Assurance-Vie Desjardins amalgamated with La Laurentian Vie, companie d’assurance inc. as of December 30, 1994 – combined and called Desjardins Laurentian Life Assurance. Now Desjardins Financial Services.
Excelsior Life Ins. Co. changed its name to Aetna Life Ins. Co. of Canada February 7, 1989. Aetna Life
Insurance Co. of Canada amalgamated with Maritime Life Assurance Co. Jan. 1, 2000. Now Manulife

MONY Life Ins. Co. of Canada changed its name to NN Life Ins. Co. of Canada on February 7, 1989.

Provinces Unies Compangie d’assurances changed its name to AXA Assurances in 1992. AXA Assurance purchased by SSQ in 2012.
Prudential Life Assurance of England – Canadian Operations, was acquired by Mutual Life of Canada effective January 1, 1995. Mutual Life Assurance Co. of Canada changed its name to Clarica Life Insurance Co. July 21, 1999. Clarica became part of Sun Life of Canada.
Prudential of America Life Ins. Co. (Canada) discontinued operations while its assets and liabilities were acquired by RBC Life, London Life and Great West Life.
Royal Life Insurance Co. of Canada changed its name to Royal & Sun Alliance Ins. Co. of Canada as of March 23, 1998. Royal & SunAlliance was acquired by Maritime Life on October 1, 2001. Maritime Life was purchased by Manulife.
Seaboard Life Insurance Co. merged with North West Life Assurance Co. of Canada to become Industrial Alliance Pacific Life Insurance Co. as of Sep 1, 2001. Now Industrial Alliance.
Sovereign Life's individual life insurance book of business was assumed by Standard Life after the Ontario Superintendent of Financial Services took over control of the company in 1992.
Sun Alliance and London Assurance Co. Ltd. Ceased transacting business and transferred all Canadian policies to Sun Alliance and London Assurance Co. (Canada) Nov. 24, 1992. Sun Alliance and London Assurance Co. (Canada) changed its name to TBD Life Ins. Co. as of Aug. 1995.
Transamerica Life Insurance Co. of Canada merged with NN Life Insurance Co. of Canada December 31, 2000. Now known as Transamerica Life only.
