What is a Broker?
A life insurance broker deals with a number of companies rather than one or two. When you run your own quotes you will quickly see that premiums are quite different from company to company. That is only half of the story.
Are you getting the best deal in relation to your present health?
There are five different health ratings. The better the rating the lower the premium. So even though one company may have the lowest premium they may not acknowledge your present health in the same way that another company will. An experienced broker will know which companies will rate you more favorably.
Experienced underwriting and access to the right companies is even more important if you have any health conditions that could affect your premium in a more dramatic way - such as diabetes, high blood pressure, nervous disorders, etc. A broker has access to far more companies and will know which ones are more receptive to your particular situation.
Don't forget - what you save in premium by making the right choice this year is also what you save every year. If you have a broker that does it right this time around, the chances of you buying life insurance at a lower premium in the future is highly unlikely. Who wants to find out five years from now that they overpaid.
Product Knowledge
An agent working with one company may know everything there is to know about the product he sells. The real question that needs to be asked is "How well does he know all of the products offered on the market and how his product compares?" The second question is "If the product he has is inferior will he tell you?"
With enough research you can answer that question. Is it worth the time and effort? Is dealing with a broker getting off to a better start?
Brokers don't work in isolation.
A typical broker will work with a group of other brokers served by a common management firm. The experience of all the brokers within the group is shared. I often seek out the opinion of other brokers so I may enhance results for my clients. As an individual we can not possibly have all the answers. Many brokers have a special niche they study thoroughly and do a substantial amount of business in. Their expert ice is second to none. It is nice to have excess to those experts.
